SMALL SCREECH OWL HOUSE, NESTING BOX BY HOLLEYS

The screech owls help reduce mice, small snakes, and some insect populations.

Our house/nesting box is made with  5/8" thick Ohio hard pine--it is rough cut wood that is air dried before manufacturing and will last for several  years.  It is durable and provides excellent insulation from weather.  We fire harden each house to give it 2-5 additional years.  The house comes with two owls branded on the front of it.

Details:

  • Each house is fire hardened to make it maintenance free.
  • It also comes with nesting material.
  • Mounting bracket with screws and complete instructions for mounting  on tree (or pole) is included.
  • Instructions for placement is included.
  • Simple bar beneath entry hole acts as predator guard.
  • The house has an easy access door on front or side that is held in with pins for cleaning and checking the nest.
  • There is ample "perch" space, the place from which screech owls hunt.
  • We will customize your house to the specific species of screech owl in your area.
  •  Call Holleys at 330-221-8799 and a wildlife specialist will answer  questions or concerns.

It is not native to Great Britain, but was first introduced in 1842,[2] by Thomas Powys and is now naturalised there. It was also successfully introduced to the South Island of New Zealand in the early 20th century. This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, Strigidae, which contains most species of owl. The other grouping is the barn owls, Tytonidae. The Little Owl is a small owl, usually 22 centimetres (8.7 in) tall with a wingspan of 56 centimetres (22 in) for all genders, and weighs about 180 grams (6.3 oz).[3] The adult Little Owl of the most widespread form, the nominate A. n. noctua, is white-speckled brown above, and brown-streaked white below. It has a large head, long legs, and yellow eyes, and its white "eyebrows" give it a stern expression. This species has a bounding flight like a woodpecker. Juveniles are duller, and lack the adult's white crown spots. The call is a querulous kee-ik. There is a pale grey-brown Middle Eastern type known as Syrian Little Owl A. n. lilith. Other forms include another pale race, the north African A. n. desertae, and three intermediate subspecies, A. n. indigena of southeast Europe and Asia Minor, A. n. glaux in north Africa and southwest Asia, and A. n. bactriana of central Asia. A recent paper in the ornithological journal Dutch Birding (vol. 31: 35-37, 2009) has advocated splitting the southeastern races as a separate species Lilith's Owl Athene glaux (with subspecies A. g. glaux, A. g. indigena, and A. g. lilith). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Owl The Little Owl has an average life expectancy of three years http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Owl

  1. Excellent Quality and the Olws love them! 5 Star Review

Posted by on May 12th 2017

After trying out several other brands I stumbled on Holly's Habitat homes. My first few Western Screech Owl boxes were molded plastic, and though the owls would visit and roost, they never chose them to nest in. I then tried cedar and that didn't work either. I later learned they dislike the odorous the odor, further that it is bad for the little ones. It wasn't until the cedar homes aged over one year that they even came to roost (but not nest). Finally, I put up the "tall" version of Holly's WSO box and the male loves it! He called a female and this year we have three little owlets and they are doing fabulous!! The design is well thought out, offering many inside perches when the box becomes crowded with little ones. The deep one is safe from bobcats due to the depth. I have just purchased the shorter version to experiment and hope that they like it as well. I live in AZ and have no good trees to mount them to, so I have pole-mounted with the pole in a bucket of cement which is dug into the ground. The only reason I chose the smaller version this is for the weight savings. This one will replace a cedar box that sits off a back patio w a covered roof where our female likes to roost in the off-season. It will be mounted to our home and I wanted to reduce the weight since the bolt will be going into stucco siding. Hopefully, it works and she likes it.
