After trying out several other brands I stumbled on Holly's Habitat homes. My first few Western Screech Owl boxes were molded plastic, and though the owls would visit and roost, they never chose them to nest in. I then tried cedar and that didn't work either. I later learned they dislike the odorous the odor, further that it is bad for the little ones. It wasn't until the cedar homes aged over one year that they even came to roost (but not nest). Finally, I put up the "tall" version of Holly's WSO box and the male loves it! He called a female and this year we have three little owlets and they are doing fabulous!! The design is well thought out, offering many inside perches when the box becomes crowded with little ones. The deep one is safe from bobcats due to the depth. I have just purchased the shorter version to experiment and hope that they like it as well. I live in AZ and have no good trees to mount them to, so I have pole-mounted with the pole in a bucket of cement which is dug into the ground. The only reason I chose the smaller version this is for the weight savings. This one will replace a cedar box that sits off a back patio w a covered roof where our female likes to roost in the off-season. It will be mounted to our home and I wanted to reduce the weight since the bolt will be going into stucco siding. Hopefully, it works and she likes it.
